“After our engagement, our leadership team is more knowledgeable, confident, and better prepared to discuss AI with the board and better equipped to work with their managers and staff around AI adoption.”
Olga Stachova
CEO, MOSAIC BC
MOSAIC BC is a not-for-profit organization offering settlement and employment services for newcomers to Canada. With a desire to be true to their mission, efficient with their resources, and empowering to their staff, leaders at MOSAIC knew AI tools could play a big role. But how to get staff trained and equipped with guardrails to guide responsible, effective AI usage? This is the question Sam was asked to help explore.
We started with a survey, to get the lay of the land. It revealed a number of helpful insights, including that 93% of respondents were already using AI tools in their regular work. Staff reported a broad range of applications and benefits including improvements in efficiency, communication and creativity. However, the survey also revealed that some staff members had natural concerns about AI usage, and were looking for training and organizational guidance.
"I’m using AI in a personal capacity. Professionally, I see how this can be a great tool in the future, but still waiting on organizational guidance.”
— Mosaic Staff Member
So, training and organizational guidance is exactly what MOSAIC stepped into providing next. Sam helped develop the MOSAIC Responsible AI Framework, consisting of four interconnected layers (Principles, Policy, Oversight, and Processes), designed to ensure ethical, secure, and effective AI adoption across the organization. The framework includes draft policies and ready-to-go templates to guide risk assessment and staff AI usage guidelines. These practical, staff-facing guidelines were built to be easy-to-use by MOSAIC’s staff, allowing the organization to move ahead with greater clarity and momentum.
"AI will be as common a tool as internet and email - eventually it will be a required skill to have in this department. It will be a fundamental tool in the non-profit sector."
— Mosaic Leader
What’s next for MOSAIC?
- There are areas MOSAIC now knows AI can bring high value, and involve low risk. For those, it’s time to implement solutions.
- Some MOSAIC staff and clients are ready to go deeper in skills development on effective AI usage.
- In-house, they’re ready to take new leadership, launching their AI Centre of Excellence to identify specific opportunities and guide AI adoption.
Engage your staff, and move forward with using AI as a force for good. Whether you need your own Responsible AI guidelines, or help teaching your staff, SAM can help train, equip and empower your organization to make real progress.
